We almost never get to see Orcas in Turnagain Arm near Anchorage. Traffic was stopped at McHugh Creek as I was driving down to Seward, and no wonder. The last time I saw any Orcas in Turnagain Arm was 1990. A nice sized family group with what looked like a couple of youngsters.

We hardly ever get to see Ermines around the house, so it was a treat to have one hanging out in our scrap-wood pile this morning.

We just got back from a 3 week trip to Italy and France. Rome was our first stop. The entire city was under construction getting ready for the 2025 Jubilee. The Jubilee is a centuries-old Catholic tradition that occurs every 25 years. It's a time for spiritual renewal, forgiveness, and celebratio

With clear skies tonight we drove up to the parking lot at Flattop high above Anchorage around 7:30pm hoping to get a view of the comet Tsuchinshan-ATLAS. There were quite a few people waiting and praying the cloud layers would clear. And finally, we could see it! Really fun sharing this once in

It was great to be out shooting aurora again around 3:30am. Only the second time shooting with the new camera system and lens, so very much still getting used to it. Click on an image to see full-screen.

We love to get in a late-season trip to Denali after the tour buses have stopped running for the year and most of the tourists are gone. Riley Creek campground is open and free and you can drive your own vehicle out to the Teklanika rest stop. We had three days of beautiful weather-in the upper 30

We bought a new car in Seattle and are making the drive up for the first time. We took the car ferry to Haines when we moved up. I didn’t take many photos the first 3 days from Seattle to Fort Nelson. Today we’re traveling from Fort Nelson to the Liard River Hot Springs and then spending the nigh

We’re just back from a solid week in Denali and wow, did we luck out this year. We had beautiful weather most of the time, incredible fall colors that were changing rapidly while we were there—almost to peak color—and bears everywhere. We saw five different sets of sows with either cubs of the yea

Devany was working out of town for the week, so I decided to sneak in a trip to Denali. I spent three days biking the park road from the Teklanika campground looking for critters and wildflowers on this trip. Jackpot on both! There were bears everywhere and the fireweed this year is just insane.

We had some very welcome visitors to the backyard this morning. Mama looks like she had a very rough winter, but survived our record snowfall and brought this little bundle of cute into the world.

We made our first trip of the year up to Denali National Park and Preserve, spending a full week camped at the Teklanika campground 29 miles inside the park. We spent 5 full days mountain biking the park road from Tek to the East Fork River and back, almost 200 miles of biking. It’s our favorite p

I walked out of the garage to find this big old porcupine nibbling on the fresh green grass right at the edge of the house. I grabbed the camera and watched as he slowly made his way down the bank next to the house. Love watching these gentle creatures.

We drove out to Willow for the official start of the Iditarod Sled Dog Race on Sunday. Our friends on Long Lake always throw an Iditarod start party, and we had a blast. The temperature warmed up nicely throughout the afternoon. It’s always fun to see these dogs that absolutely love to run! Way
