Nina Tame on Instagram: "Don’t let the glitz, glam and glitter distract from the fact that this isn’t bloody Dickens times. Kids shouldn’t have to dance for their suppers. Charity is filling the huge gaping holes our government should be fixing. #PissOnPity Image descriptions. A series of text on white background with a pink frame - 1/8 It’s Children in Need season. I always feel like an absolute grinch critiquing it because it’s so beloved and obviously raises needed cash. But my ick outweighs my discomfort at being impolite so here we go (a thread) 2/8 Kids should not have to go on national TV and disclose their medical diagnosis or their trauma in order for people to put their hands in their pocket and donate. We can definitely raise money without exploiting kids for pity likes. 3/8 We don’t need Coldplay blaring over a black and white shot of a kid looking sad. We don’t need inspiring music and disabled kids being held up as inspirational just because they’re disabled. It’s so bloody othering and mank. 4/8 I’ve a disabled kid, we let him miss sports day every year because in his words “Mum all the parents are gonna clap really hard for me and be like awwww, and it feels weird”. As a disabled adult I get it because the pity follows you around forever. 5/8 Children in Need plays into these narratives and enables them to continue. Offering up the idea that disabled people are needy instead of needing equality. Chuck some cash at the disadvantaged kids once a year whilst still upholding the systems that make them disadvantaged the other 364 days? 6/8 Like how many of the companies, schools, businesses and so on that have their giant cheque held up on the telly, actually have accessible premises? Are making any effort to facilitate change towards equality in their own environments? 7/8 I think this once a year emotive spectacular makes people think they’ve done enough, all the glitz and glam is also a distraction from the real issue at hand which is our government should already be funding all of this. 8/8 Kids shouldn’t have to Tiny Tim their way onto the telly and disclose their personal medical details in order to get their needs met. There’s got to be a better way?"
